If you just moved here, someone has probably already asked if you play golf. That's not an accident.
The Woodlands was designed from the ground up as a live-work-play community, and golf is woven into the fabric of it. There are world-class private clubs here, a PGA Tour event that comes through every spring, and enough public and semi-private courses within 20 minutes to keep a casual player busy all year. The climate helps too — you can realistically tee it up in every month of the year, though July and August will have you out the door by sunrise if you know what's good for you.
Whether you've never swung a club or you played in college and are just getting back into it, here's what you need to know to find your place in the local golf scene.
Where Casual Players Actually Play
The two big private clubs — The Woodlands Country Club and The Club at Carlton Woods — are membership-only and set the ceiling for what golf in this area can be. Carlton Woods has a Jack Nicklaus course and a Tom Fazio course, both considered among the best in Houston. The Woodlands Country Club's Tournament Course has hosted PGA Tour events. If you eventually get into a membership, those are the aspirational targets.
But for everyday golf, locals without a club membership tend to rotate through a handful of accessible courses.
Augusta Pines Golf Club in Spring is probably the most popular daily-fee option closest to The Woodlands. It's semi-private, meaning they sell memberships but welcome public play every day. Expect to pay roughly $75 to $110 on weekends including cart, with lower weekday and twilight rates. The course winds through mature pines, oaks, and about 30 acres of lakes, and they have a solid practice facility. It's a good benchmark course to see where your game stands.
The Links at West Fork in Conroe runs about $63 on weekdays and $75 on weekends. It's a Rick Robbins design along the West Fork of the San Jacinto River and recently made GolfPass's list of Texas's top 25 public courses for 2026. Good value, full driving range, and a layout that rewards straight ball-striking without punishing beginners too harshly.
River Plantation Golf Club, also in Conroe, is the budget-friendly staple at around $54 weekdays and $64 weekend mornings including cart. It's a straightforward, no-fuss daily-fee experience set among oaks, magnolias, and dogwoods. Long-time locals know it well and it's a reliable option when you just want to get out and play without overthinking it.
Grand Lake Golf Club out in Montgomery is the hidden gem of the group. Around $55 to $60 for 18 holes, tree-lined holes, a quiet country feel, and minimal amenities. If you want to escape the suburban golf course vibe and just play, this is your spot.
For resort golf, The Woodlands Resort's North and West Courses are open to hotel guests and offer a genuinely scenic experience. Green fees run around $200 including cart for resort guests, so it's more of a special occasion play than a regular Saturday morning option.
The Tournament Scene
One of the genuinely cool things about living here is that professional golf comes to your backyard every spring.
The Insperity Invitational is a PGA Tour Champions event held annually at The Woodlands Country Club Tournament Course. It draws 78 of the best over-50 professionals in the world, and here's the part that surprises most newcomers: grounds admission is free. The event is heavily sponsored by Insperity, Woodforest National Bank, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, which means you can walk the fairways and watch legitimate Tour-level golf at no cost. It typically runs the first week of May and is worth putting on your calendar.
From 2023 through 2025, The Club at Carlton Woods also hosted the Chevron Championship, one of the LPGA Tour's five major championships. Nelly Korda won the 2024 edition at Carlton Woods. The event has since moved to Memorial Park closer to downtown Houston, but the fact that a women's major called The Woodlands home for three years says something about the caliber of golf infrastructure here.
If You're Just Starting Out
Nobody is going to laugh you off the course here. The Woodlands has solid options for beginners who want to actually learn the game before heading out on a full 18.
Topgolf Spring, just south of The Woodlands on I-45, is the lowest-pressure entry point. Climate-controlled bays, a full bar and restaurant, open until midnight, and no judgment. It's more entertainment venue than practice range, but for a first-timer or someone reintroducing their family to the game, it's an easy yes.
GOLFTEC The Woodlands in Conroe offers indoor lessons built around launch monitors, swing-tracking technology, and video analysis. No prior experience needed, and their coaches are specifically set up for structured beginner programs. This is a smart option in the dead of summer when nobody wants to be on an outdoor range in 95-degree heat.
The Woodlands Golf Academy at The Woodlands Resort offers a more traditional instruction experience for resort guests, including Titleist Performance Institute screening to build a personalized practice plan. If you're visiting someone and want to pick up a lesson or two, this is worth looking into.
One Practical Tip Before You Book
Weekend morning tee times at the public courses fill up fast, especially in the spring and fall when the weather is perfect. Most courses let you book seven days out online. If you're flexible, weekday afternoons and twilight rounds are significantly cheaper and you'll almost never wait. Summer heat pushes a lot of regulars toward 7 AM tee times or evening twilight rounds, so that's when you'll find the most availability mid-day.
Welcome to the golf capital of the Houston suburbs. See you on the course.
